The Rowett Institute heating system utilses steam as a primary heating source. As steam is commonly used in laboratories for sterilisation, building services engineers take advantage of this and use it for hot water and space heating. The latent heat from steam is far more effective than using sensible heat from hot water, as the rate of heat transfer is much greater giving instantaneous domestic hot water.
